MMI provided the structural engineering for the redevelopment of the student housing. This included Bruff Quad phase 1, and Phase 2 with the 7 story Fogelman and 6 story Patterson dormitory buildings. The new dormitories are situated adjacent to each other. The buildings primarily function as residence halls but will also include some multi-functional spaces, lounges and staff areas. The buildings were constructed utilizing a cast in place concrete system consisting of post-tensioned flat slabs at the second-level podium level and cold-formed metal framing for the upper levels.

The foundation support is provided by 16” diameter, 78ft long auger-cast in place pile (ACIP) with a design load of 57 tons. The building’s superstructure and 1st floor are pile-supported utilizing ACIP piles. Piles are grouped together into pile caps at column and shear wall locations. Individual piles are incorporated to provide support for the 1st floor framing.

Brick veneer was the primary finish for the exterior walls. To support the brick, galvanized steel relief angles wererequired at the perimeter of the slab edge at each floor. The upper floors utilize cold-formed metal framed load bearing stud walls. The floor consists of concrete supported by a composite metal deck that spans across the walls.
