YOUTH STUDY CENTER AND JUVENILE JUSTICE CENTER
MMI provided structural design services for the 107,000 square foot replacement facility for the existing Youth Study Center and a new Juvenile Justice Center. The Youth Study Facility included forty beds, four classrooms and a library, dining area, administrative offices, and a gymnasium. The structural framing consisted of a cast in place two-way concrete slab on composite timber piles, load bearing CMU walls and metal decking supported by steel bar joists. The foundation and first floor for the pre-fabricated gymnasium consisted of a cast in place two-way concrete slab supported on single piles and pile caps below the building columns.
The Juvenile Justice Center included 4 courtrooms, judges’ chambers and private offices for the District Attorney and Public Defenders, and offices for Planned Positive Attitude (PPA) services. The new Juvenile Justice Facility is a steel framed structure supported on a cast in place two-way concrete slab on composite timber piles. CMU bearing walls were used at the high security areas within the building. The project showed the City of New Orleans’ commitment to helping rebuild after Hurricane Katrina.
