MMI provided structural and civil engineering services for the 260,000 square foot addition and renovation to the existing 5-story Chemistry, Physics, and Math building. The scope of the project included a 114,000 square foot addition that created new 6th, 7th, and 8th floors, as well as three new multi-story circulation bustles that were added around the perimeter of the existing building. To save on weight, the new structure consisted of lightweight cast in place concrete on composite metal decking supported by composite steel beams and steel columns.

Analysis of the combined new structure was done using ETABS, a finite element analysis and design program and incorporated the latest building code requirements, due to the level of structural alterations that were being made. New foundation work included the installation of 80 foot 14-inch square precast pre-stressed concrete piles that were selected to be compatible with the existing foundation and avoid pile load tests. A few of the unique features of the project include a re-cladding of the entire exterior wall with a rain screen system, a greenhouse, and phasing of the new work to allow for the building to be occupied during construction.
