ERATO STREET CRUISE TERMINAL + PARKING GARAGE
MMI provided the foundation design for the precast, 1,006 car parking garage, a helical ramp, a two-story cruise terminal below the garage and new wharf structure.
The cruise terminal consists of a six-story precast concrete structure. MMI was responsible for the design of the first level, including the foundation of the entire terminal structure. MMI designed the structure to be supported on 14” and 20” diameter pipe piles. A steel sheet pile bulkhead was designed and installed to restore the box levee. Bank stabilization was required. All pile caps are cast-in-place conventionally reinforced concrete. The first floor area at grade was pile supported and conventionally reinforced.
The new building is constructed at the edge of the Mississippi River. The soils and bank profile are such that that stability of the bank would have been compromised with the addition of the new facility. The solution was to degrade the batture twelve feet below the building and relocate the bulkhead wall further away from the edge of the river. All of this was incorporated into the foundations of the building which also had to provide lateral resistance for the new bulkhead location.
